Two chapels, two different rooms
Sainte-Chapelle's lower chapel vs upper chapel
Same building, two distinct rooms built for different people — what separates the ground floor from the glass-walled room above it.

The lower chapel, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, served the palace's non-royal household. The upper chapel was reserved for the king, his family and the relics themselves.
Different architecture, different purpose
The lower chapel has a lower, more intimate scale with painted decoration rather than wall-to-wall glass. The upper chapel's walls are reduced to slender stone mullions carrying the famous windows.
Getting between them
The two levels connect by narrow spiral stairs, and the monument's own access notes also list a lift to the upper chapel, so visitors who can't manage the stairs can still reach the glass.
What each one is for today
The lower chapel is the first room most visitors pass through. The upper chapel, with its stained glass, is the destination most people are there for.
